Pediatric Level One Year
During the first year of pediatric training emphasis is placed on a foundation of general pediatric medicine and the diagnosis and management of patients admitted to the hospital. Roughly half of the patients are supervised by a UH Hospitalist. The other half is supervised by community attending physicians. Residents are also introduced to the management of common adolescent, behavioral-developmental, and general pediatric problems encountered in the outpatient setting. First year residents are provided with numerous patient care situations under the supervision of senior level residents and faculty, and they are responsible for the day-to-day management and order writing on all patients. The year is divided into 13 four-week blocks, which include the following:

Inpatient General Pediatrics 16 weeks
Hematology-Oncology 4 weeks
Newborn Nursery 8 weeks
Neonatal Intensive Care 8 weeks
Adolescent Medicine 4 weeks
Behavioral-Developmental Pediatrics 4 weeks
Community Pediatrics 4 weeks
Vacation/Procedures 3 weeks
Continuity Clinic one half-day per week over entire year

Pediatric Level Two Year
The second year of pediatric training expands diagnosis and patient management skills through subspecialty rotations and supervisory experience on the general inpatient wards and in the NICU. Residents are also introduced to pediatric emergency medicine and pediatric intensive care. Residents also begin to see more acute care patients. During calls nights on the wards, upper level residents answer calls for the clinic patients as well. The usual second year includes:

Inpatient General Pediatrics 12 weeks
Neonatal Intensive Care 8 weeks
Pediatric Emergency Medicine 8 weeks
Pediatric Intensive Care 4 weeks
Pediatric Subspecialties 12 weeks
Community Pediatrics 4 weeks
Vacation/Procedures 3 weeks/1 week
Continuity Clinic two half-days per week over entire year

Pediatric Level Three Year
The third year of pediatric training provides an opportunity for residents to refine their skills in diagnosis and patient management, and also emphasizes the supervision and teaching of junior level residents. During the Shriners rotation, they act as the primary pediatrician. Orthopedic and rehabilitation services are provided to children through the Pacific Basin. Senior pediatric residents also act as an attending in training for pediatric resident newborn nursery patients. The typical third year includes:

Inpatient General Pediatrics 12 weeks
Shriner's Hospital for Children 4 weeks
Acute Care 4 weeks
Nursery/Elective 4 weeks
Pediatric Emergency Medicine 4 weeks
Pediatric Intensive Care 4 weeks
Pediatric Subspecialities 16 weeks
Educational Leave 1 week
Vacation/Procedures 3 weeks/1 week
Continuity Clinic two half-days per week over entire year
